Muskegon, MI

With its ten year record as an awarding winning sailing school in Florida, Flagship Sailing is expanding into a new facility at the Great Lakes Marina in Muskegon, Michigan.

Although Flagship Sailing is new to Michigan, its director and primary instructor, James A. Thompson, is a seasoned Michigan sailor dating back to 1975 when he was a professor at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids. Jim became a sailing instructor in 1982. In 1986, he founded one of the first American Sailing Association sailing schools on the Great Lakes in Muskegon. Since that time, Jim has continued to teach sailing in Michigan during the summer and in Florida during the winter. He has spent the last eight winters teaching ASA courses for Flagship Sailing in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Florida.

Presently, in addition to his teaching responsibilities, Jim is an International Site Evaluator for ASA; a member of ASA’s National Standards Committee; and, as an Instructor Evaluator, certifies new ASA instructors as well as students. He has received ASA’s Instructor of the Year award and has been instrumental in earning ASA’s School of the Year award on several occasions for the Flagship Sailing School.
